Residency in Critical Care Medicine

The purpose of the residency in Critical Care is to provide the resident specialized training in the delivery of pharmaceutical care to critically ill patients. This goal is met by completing the elements of the program as listed below.

Program

There is one Critical Care resident position available to an eligible candidate.

The 12-month program is intended to prepare the resident for independent practice in the intensive care setting. Primary emphasis is placed on the development of clinical practice skills through direct patient care and didactic learning. Teaching and research skills will also be developed.

This residency offers several critical care practice sites, including: Burn Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit, Clinical Nutrition, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Medical ICU, Neonatal ICU, Neurosurgical Critical Care, Pediatric ICU, Solid Organ and Bone Marrow Transplant, Surgical ICU, and Trauma. Shands at UF is a Level 1 Trauma Center.

The resident will be an integral part of the health care team for each service, providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care services, including pharmacotherapy consults, pharmacokinetic analysis, drug information and intensive monitoring of each patient on service.

Additional requirements include (but are not limited to):

  • Staffing (inpatient distribution activities and Adult On-Call clinical service) an average of eight hours per week.
  • Assist in precepting Pharm.D. clerkship students from the University of Florida.
  • Assist in training pharmacy practice residents during their Critical Care rotations.
  • Conduct one drug utilization evaluation on a topic or drug pertinent to critical care.
  • Complete Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training.
  • Attend rotation-specific Grand Rounds and Morning Report on a weekly basis.
  • Make two formal presentations on a therapeutic controversy to the department.
  • Present a major project at the Southeastern Regional Residency Conference in Athens, Georgia, or an equivalent forum.

Stipend

The resident receives a $42,500 stipend paid by Shands at UF. The stipend, coupled with the comparatively low cost of living in Gainesville, should ensure a financially sufficient year.

Selected and matched applicants will receive partial reimbursement for interview expenses, when accompanied by receipts, at the beginning of the residency year. Assistance with local expenses will be provided to all candidates interviewed.

Requirements

To be eligible for the residency in Critical Care Pharmacy Practice at Shands at UF, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Academic: The applicant must have a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited school or college and a residency certificate from a pharmacy practice residency (PGY1) before enrolling in this advanced residency program.
  • Professional License: All residents will be required to take and pass the Florida Pharmacy Board Examination by June.
  • Interview: An on-site interview is required.
  • Non-Resident Alien Applicants: To be considered for employment, you must presently have an employment authorization that is valid throughout the residency period.
