Residency in Pharmacy Practice

ASHP LogoThe residency in Pharmacy Practice at Shands at the University of Florida is an ASHP-accredited program emphasizing clinical pharmacy practice and its relationship to the total health system. The residency provides a framework for the practitioner to develop the skills necessary for providing pharmaceutical care in a variety of different health care settings.

Program

There are seven pharmacy resident positions available to eligible candidates at Shands at UF. These are divided among pharmacy practice and several other specialties. Two to four of the positions will be in the pharmacy practice program. This residency offers six required rotations and provides ample time for elective rotations in a variety of settings.

Inpatient

Required

  • Medicine, Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases

Elective Rotations

  • MICU, Cardiology, Nutrition, PICU, NICU, SICU & CTICU, Hematology/ Oncology, BMTU

Ambulatory Care

Required

  • Anticoagulation Clinic

Elective Rotations

  • Adult HIV, Pediatric/ Immunology, Family Practice, Pediatric Pulmonary, Cancer Center

Practice Management

Required

  • Drug Information, Administration

Elective Rotations

  • Investigational Drug Service, Ambulatory Operations, Inpatient Support Services

Resident Duties

While a resident at Shands at UF, each resident will:

  • Staff an average of twelve hours per week
  • Conduct a Medication Use Evaluation
  • Complete and present a P&T monograph
  • Complete and publish an article for the Drugs and Therapy Bulletin
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings with the director of pharmacy and other preceptors
  • Assist in precepting undergraduate Pharm.D. students
  • Present a project at the Florida Residency Conference in Gainesville, FL.
  • Make a formal presentation on a therapeutic controversy to the department

Each resident is required to complete a project. Projects must receive prior approval and must be in publishable form upon completion of the residency.

Stipend

The resident receives a $37,500 stipend paid by Shands at UF. The stipend, coupled with the comparatively low cost of living in Gainesville, should ensure a financially sufficient year.

Selected and matched applicants will receive partial reimbursement for interview expenses, when accompanied by receipts, at the beginning of the residency year. Assistance with local expenses will be provided to all candidates interviewed.

Requirements

To be eligible for a Pharmacy Practice residency at Shands at UF, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Academic: The applicant must have a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited school or college. The applicant should have completed a pharmacy practice residency or have strong hospital pharmacy experience before enrolling in this advanced residency program. .
  • Professional License: All residents will be required to take and pass the Florida Pharmacy Board Examination by June.
  • Professional Experience: The successful candidate will have acquired hospital and clinical practice skills through an ASHP-accredited residency or equivalent experience.
  • Interview: An on-site interview is required.
  • Non-Resident Alien Applicants: To be considered for employment, you must presently have an employment authorization that is valid throughout the residency period.
